What we learned about Kansas City Chiefs in stunning 16-14 win vs. Denver Broncos

The Kansas City Chiefs are still undefeated. Somehow.

KC looked at its first loss directly in the face before some special-teams heroics, as the Chiefs escaped with a 16-14 home victory over the Denver Broncos on the game’s last play Sunday afternoon.

Denver kicker Wil Lutz lined up for a 35-yard field goal with 1 second left — one of the most helpless feelings in football for an NFL team on the other side — when the Chiefs plowed through the line for a blocked field goal.

Leo Chenal received final credit for the deflection, though teammates Mike Danna and George Karlaftis were there as well.

After the block, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes ran on the field in celebration, extending his arms in jubilation as KC improved to 9-0.

It sure appeared before that Denver rookie quarterback Bo Nix had engineered a game-winning drive in the final six minutes. He led the Broncos 43 yards on a six-minute drive while milking the clock to set up Lutz’s potential game-winner.

That was after Chiefs had a missed opportunity on their previous possession.

Trailing 14-13, KC had third-and-goal at the Denver 2 when tight end Travis Kelce broke free on the back line of the end zone. Mahomes put too much on the throw, though, sailing it over Kelce’s head as the Chiefs had to settle for a field goal.

The Broncos led 14-10 at half thanks to great production from a previously struggling offense.

Denver put together 80- and 70-yard touchdown drives in the second quarter, with Nix looking comfortable in the pocket while completing 14 of 20 passes for 160 yards before the break.

KC trailed 14-3 before pushing through for a touchdown on its final possession of the half. Chiefs coach Andy Reid was the biggest reason for that, making the analytically correct decision to go for it on fourth-and-goal from the 2.

Mahomes executed from there, finding Kelce for a 2-yard score as the Chiefs pulled back within four.

KC had to deal with an early injury to the offensive line, as left tackle Wanya Morris left in the second quarter after hurting his knee. Rookie Kingsley Suamataia stepped in for Morris on the left side before Morris re-entered the contest in the fourth quarter.

The Chiefs will play on the road against the Buffalo Bills at 3:25 p.m. Central on Sunday, Nov. 17.
