Leafs goalie Matt Murray out at least 6-8 months after hip surgery

Don't expect to see Matt Murray in net for the Leafs during the 2023-24 NHL season.

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Matt Murray underwent bilateral hip surgery and will miss at least six to eight months of action, the team announced Monday.

The Maple Leafs placed Murray on long-term injured reserve in July. Toronto general manager Brad Treliving told reporters on Sept. 20 that Murray required "significant" surgery that would require rehab.

Murray was acquired in a July 2022 trade with the Ottawa Senators and entered last season as the Leafs' nominal starter.

The two-time Stanley Cup winner experienced a turbulent opening season with the franchise. Murray began the season strong before an adductor injury sidelined him for four weeks. He returned to action in December before his play significantly tailed off when the new calendar year began.

The 29-year-old suffered several minor injuries throughout the year before an April concussion ended his season when Detroit Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond awkwardly collided with him. Murray played in 26 games, posting a 14-8-2 record with a .901 save percentage during the regular season.

As a result of Murray’s long-term injury, his $4.687-million salary for the 2023-24 campaign has been tacked on Toronto’s LTIR pool for the upcoming year. Murray and injured teammate Jake Muzzin’s salaries amount to $10.31 million in the LTIR pool.

It’s entirely possible that Murray has already played his final game with the Maple Leafs, as he is slated to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year. Assuming his recovery goes smoothly, some teams may look to make a short-term, calculated bet on the veteran goalie.

Ilya Samsonov figures to get the lion's share of playing time in the Maple Leafs' crease in 2023-24, with Joseph Woll factoring in as the backup.
