Leading OHL Scorer Suspended For Checking From Behind

League-leading scorer Porter Martone has been suspended one game for checking from behind. The suspension kept him out of the Steelheads' game against Kingston this afternoon.

The hit in question occurred during the third period of last night's contest against the Ottawa 67's.

Down 3-1, Martone chased after a puck in the 67's zone. He sped into the corner and slammed into Ottawa defender Frankie Marrelli on a late hit from behind.

The call was swiftly made by the referees who then reviewed the hit for a five-minute major. Shortly thereafter, Martone was ejected from the game. It does not appear at this time that Marrelli was injured on the play.

Ultimately, the hit by the Steelheads captain sealed the victory for Ottawa who scored once during the five-minute penalty assessed to Martone and won the game 5-1.

It was a frustrating game for Brampton. The deadly trio of Martone, Carson Rehkopf and Michael Misa were kept off the board by Ottawa's tight-checking defense.

Martone will not be in the lineup for the contest against Kingston this afternoon. His absence compounds the roster problems the Steelheads were already facing with Angus MacDonell and Stevie Leskovar currently out due to injury.

Martone will be eligible to return for Brampton's home game against Brantford on Sunday.
