In a fresh twist, S.S Lazio have upped their bid for Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood.

Earlier in the week, it seemed that Olympique de Marseille had already agreed a deal with United for the sale of the controversial English striker.

It was reported that the Ligue 1 side and United had struck an agreement for €31.6million and that the 22 year old was keen to move to the French club in spite of interest from Lazio.

It was relayed here that Greenwood had in fact turned down a move to Rome and this led to comments from the Lazio president, Claudio Lotito, that his club was pursuing a player “ten times better” than the United striker.

Nonetheless, even though the matter appeared all done and dusted, there was twist in the tail as Marseille mayor, Benoit Payan, condemned the French side’s pursuit of the forward due to his past legal problems.

It also emerged yesterday that the Serie A club had not given up all hope on a move for Greenwood and Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport have confirmed that Lazio have in fact increased their bid.

According to the paper, the new offer “is around €23 million, it can reach 25 confirming 50% of future resale”.

Lazio have reportedly been able to slightly increase their offer as they have accepted a deal for forward Ciro Immobile from Turkish side Besiktas.

It is unclear whether or not this will change anything as “Marseille offered 30 million plus 30% of future resale to United”, therefore they still have put the more attractive deal on the table for the Red Devils to consider.

The paper suggests that a move can only happen “if the attacker can blow up the operation. He must be the one to reject OM in preference to Lazio.”

This is where the transfer becomes murkier as there are mixed reports on whether or not Greenwood would be happier to go to France or Italy.

United will be hoping they can close a deal to whoever the highest bidder is, as the sale of the attacker would represent pure profit for PSR and would add considerably to the summer budget as the club is in the midst of chasing numerous players to strengthen the squad.
