Latest Chiefs injury updates for D.J. Humphries, Harrison Butker, Hollywood Brown
Chiefs left tackle D.J. Humphries did not practice Wednesday, but he hasn’t been ruled out for playing in Sunday’s game at the Cleveland Browns.
“We haven’t listed him as out, we’re just going to take it day by day and see how he does,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “Every day he’s gotten a little better.”
Humphries made his Chiefs debut in last Sunday’s win against the Los Angeles Chargers. He started at left tackle and played every snap until suffering a hamstring injury in the fourth quarter.
Wanya Morris, the Chiefs’ former starter at the position, finished the game at left tackle.
Humphries spent his first eight NFL years with the Arizona Cardinals. His 2023 season ended in December with a torn ACL. The Chiefs’ 19-17 win over the Chargers on Sunday was his first game since them.
On Wednesday, Humphries participated in the walk-through portion of practice that was open to reporters.
Harrison Butker eligible to return
Kicker Harrison Butker is eligible to come off injured reserve this week. Reid said he’ll get reps in practice this week before coaches make a decision about whether to activate him.
The Chiefs’ kicking game has been solid in Butker’s absence. Butker has been sidelined since suffering a knee injury that required surgery ahead of the Chiefs’ Week 11 game against the Buffalo Bills.
Since then, the Chiefs have signed and used two kickers in games. Spencer Shrader handled duties for the first two, booting a game-winning field goal against the Carolina Panthers.
But he suffered a hamstring injury in a workout after that game and Matthew Wright has handled KC’s placekicking chores since then. Wright hit the game-winning field goal against the Chargers while safety Justin Reid handled kickoffs.
Butker was kicking on the outdoor practice fields Wednesday while the rest of the team was working indoors.
Wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown appears to be getting closer to a return, too. The veteran free agent signed by the Chiefs last offseason was injured on the first play of the preseason. Then he underwent surgery to repair a dislocated sternoclavicular joint in his shoulder.
“He’s getting close,” Reid said of Brown. “He’s champing at the bit to get back out there. But he’s got to visit with the doctors to make sure he gets clearance there.
“But I’d say he’s getting close and he says he feels great.”
