Lane Kiffin bringing Michigan, Tennessee, others to Florida Atlantic camp

Lane Kiffin will reportedly welcome some coaching colleagues to Florida Atlantic next month, including at least one of his former employers.

According to multiple outlets, Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh (and staff) and coaches from Tennessee, where Kiffin was head coach in 2009 before unceremoniously departing for USC, will be among those in attendance for June 5’s Owls Elite camp in Boca Raton. Coaches from Arkansas (including Bret Bielema, per ESPN.com), Illinois and Vanderbilt will also make the trip to see some of the local high school talent. Oregon is also involved, according to the Sun Sentinel.

Staffs from Alabama, where Kiffin was the offensive coordinator before parting ways with the program ahead of the national championship game, LSU, Georgia, Michigan State and Iowa also “could join the camp,” according to ESPN.

Another camp — an Adidas Showcase — will be hosted by FAU a few days later on June 8. That camp involves coaches from Arizona State, Nebraska, Louisville, Miami, Mississippi State, NC State, Texas A&M, Indiana, Northern Illinois, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Miami (Ohio) and others.

These camps, often called satellite camps, have become increasingly popular in recent years, prompting rule changes. For one, the number of days coaches can participate in camps decreased from 30 to 10. Also, camps must “take place on a school’s campus or in facilities regularly used by the school for practice or competition.”

Satellite camps were briefly banned by the NCAA Division I Council last offseason, but the Division I Board of Directors quickly rescinded that ruling and called for further discussion.
