Lance Briggs lists type of players he wants for Bears defense in 2025
Many changes are expected for the Chicago Bears this offseason, from a brand new coaching staff to a heavy makeover of the roster with the cap space and draft capital at their disposal.
The two biggest areas of concern on the roster are the offensive and defensive line, with the Bears lacking the ability to not only get to opposing quarterbacks but to protect their own in rookie Caleb Williams.
After the firing of head coach Matt Eberflus, the team's defensive performance took a major step back, allowing 130 points in their final five games when under interim head coach Thomas Brown. Needing to significantly upgrade their defense is a focus point for many, including legendary former linebacker Lance Briggs, who now serves as an analyst for CHGO.
During an appearance on 670 the Score, Briggs was asked about what changes he'd like to see for the defense, and mentioned plenty.
"The number one position we need is a three-technique [defensive tackle] the guy that plays in-between the guard and the tackle, because that guy creates for everyone," Briggs said. "Then I need a defensive end, a right defensive end, a left defensive end, because these guys are going to create for everyone else. I need a weak side linebacker. I need corners that will come up and hit, safety that can be a field general. These are the guys I need, but more than anything else I need them to be disciplined, I need them to play sharp, I need them to play violent."
Briggs mentioned several players such as Andrew Billings, Montez Sweat, and others currently on the team already, but more so the characteristics he'd like to see from specific positions. It's clear that Briggs wants the Bears defense to get back to his playing days when the team was identified by their defense, which capitalized on every opportunity they created.
