Lance Briggs credits Bears for win over Packers despite draft spot
There was much conversation about the Chicago Bears' win over their bitter rival Green Bay Packers to close out the 2024 season. Some of the narrative was anger for the Bears' win costing them a higher slot in the 2025 NFL draft, while others felt a win over the Packers was necessary to only stop the season losing streak, but the losing streak to Green Bay, as well.
Losing 10 straight games on the season and losing the last 11 matchups to Green Bay -- while not winning at Lambeau Field since 2015 -- there was plenty of pride at stake for the team and organization. One player who knows how meaningful the rivalry between both teams can be is former linebacker Lance Briggs, who provided insight to a win over draft position conversation.
"There's a component here where you don't lay down," Briggs said on CHGO, when speaking about the mentality of players who want to win the rivalry game. "In the NBA, you get lottery picks. You have a lottery pick system because of teams that try to give away games so they can have a higher pick. You play the game to win. You compete, and especially when you play against your rival, you beat your rival. This team has beaten us 11 times in a row. I don't know how much more pride you want to swallow, I don't want to swallow anymore. OK so we're going to end up with the tenth pick in the draft, we'll figure it out."
Briggs would emphatically hammer home his belief that he believes the team will get their first-round pick selection correct. One of the most important picks under the Ryan Poles regime will happen at 10th overall in this year's NFL draft, and the general manager will have to hit big on the pick and his next selection of the team's head coach. A bonus would be the next coach not only understanding the Bears-Packers rivalry but emphasizing to build on the team's win to close out the 2024 season.
