Lakers head coaching rumors: Redick frontrunner again after Hurley rejects team's offer?

ESPN analyst JJ Redick looks on before game two of the 2024 NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and the Dallas Mavericks at TD Garden.
ESPN analyst JJ Redick looks on before game two of the 2024 NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and the Dallas Mavericks at TD Garden.

And it was all for naught.

Seemingly over night, UConn basketball coach Dan Hurley became the frontrunner to be the Los Angeles Lakers' next head coach. But as quickly as it started, it was over. On Monday, Hurley rejected the Lakers' offer – six years, $70 million – to become their next head coach, and now the search continues.

But what is their next course of action? Do they come crawling back to JJ Redick, who had long been considered the frontrunner, before the Hurley news dropped? Do they look elsewhere, perhaps back at James Borrego, who has already had two in-person interviews in Hollywood? Or maybe there is someone else entirely who had been lurking in the shadows and is finally coming into the light.

Here are the latest rumors surrounding the Lakers' head coaching position.

JJ Redick expected to have first formal interview with Lakers

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Lakers are turning back to their previous frontrunners: James Borrego and JJ Redick. Redick could potentially have his first formal interview with the Lakers as well.

Wojnarowski's report hints that Redick was possibly never a serious candidate for the job. Of course, there are some reports that claim Redick has not been able to interview due to his obligations with ABC broadcasting the NBA Finals. Should Redick be invited to Hollywood for an interview, it's likely it would not happen until after the series has finished.

Jay Wright emerging as potential candidate?

With Hurley out of the picture, the Lakers may be looking at a different legendary college coach now: former Villanova head coach Jay Wright.

A two-time national college basketball champion turned ESPN analyst, Wright sports a resume combining both Hurley's and Redick's credentials. According to NBA Insider Marc Stein, Wright is a "stealth candidate" for the Lakers' job, though he is unsure how serious the inquiries between both parties are at the moment.

"I had been warned early on by one well-placed insider, for what it’s worth, to stay ready in case former Villanova coach Jay Wright emerged as a stealth candidate," said Stein on Sunday. He continued, "That backstory is sure to surface sooner rather than later…presumably soon after the Lakers do or don’t land Hurley."

While it would be easy to write this off given the lack of information offered, Stein seemed to be aware of Hurley's decision before it was made public, lending some credence to his thoughts on Wright.

Anthony Davis prefers James Borrego over JJ Redick

On Wednesday last week, Marc Stein reported that Lakers star big man Anthony Davis "probably prefers" former Charlotte Hornets head coach James Borrego over JJ Redick. Stein points out that there was overlap between Borrego and Davis in New Orleans as Borrego was an assistant coach with the Pelicans when Davis was drafted No. 1 overall in 2012. Stein also pointed out that Redick did not vote for Davis as a 1st or 2nd Team All-Defensive selection this year.

Although there is a connection between Redick and LeBron James, given that the two co-host the Mind the Game podcast together, it would be worth taking into consideration the entire team's thoughts on the head coaching search. After all, the Lakers have described Borrego's interviews as "impressive" in the past.
