Former Real Madrid and Porto central defender Pepe is looking at his future after Portugal were knocked out of Euro 2024. The 41-year-old did not have his contract renewed by Porto, and is yet to announce his retirement.

With 878 games to his name and still possessing a turn of pace, there is little doubt he could add to most teams. According to Superdeporte, Celta Vigo are considering offering him a route back into La Liga if he wants it. Manager Claudio Giraldez is not entirely convinced by the options at his disposal, Joseph Aidoo, Oscar Mingueza, Carl Starfelt and Unai Nunez, and the ex-Real Madrid centre-back would be a sure thing.

It’s worth pointing out that Pepe would only have to move a couple of hours north up the same coast were he sign for Celta, an added bonus. As one of the marmite characters of 21st century Spanish football, his return would certainly add a little spice to proceedings in Galicia.
