La Liga chief Javier Tebas confirms plans to de-register Dani Olmo
Earlier this month, Barcelona secured a precautionary measure to register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor, but that decision by the Higher Sports Council (CSD) has proven to be very controversial.
The two players, two signed for Barcelona last summer, had originally only been registered until the 31st of December. The Catalan giants had failed to receive approval from La Liga or the Spanish Football Federation to extend the registration period prior to this deadline running out, but the CSD’s decision means that both are currently eligible, although the matter is still under review.
The precautionary measure has only been handed out while the CSD conducts an investigation, but La Liga and the Federation, as well as several clubs in Spain, believe that Olmo and Victor should not be allowed to play for Barcelona in the meantime.
La Liga president Javier Tebas has been very outspoken on the matter in the last couple of weeks, and on Tuesday, he confirmed (via Marca) that an appeal has been filed to have the precautionary measure taken away from Barcelona.
“We are against their registration and we are putting the resources that correspond to us in the agencies that correspond to us. And where we ask that he not be registered, logically.
“(The clubs that complained against Olmo decision) are right. If we, as a league, are raising the corresponding appeals it is because we believe that a decision has not been made in accordance with the law as it should be.”
While La Liga may win their appeal, it would not leave Barcelona open to having any of their results challenged for matches that Olmo played in, such as the 5-2 demolition of Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final.
“In the field of sports law, when a player has a license – and at this time Dani Olmo has a license to play – there is no room for challenging the results (of matches that he has played in), although they can later agree with us (that he should not be registered).”
