Kyle Schwarber hits homer onto the street outside Wrigley Field

Kyle Schwarber and his .186 batting average haven’t exactly been thrilling this season for the Chicago Cubs. But with one swing Tuesday night, Schwarber proved that he still carries one of the baseball’s most dangerous bats.

Facing Johnny Cueto and the San Francisco Giants, Schwarber smashed a ball completely out of Wrigley Field onto Sheffield Avenue. It was like it hitched a ride on a missile and landed 470 feet later.

Let’s look at some of the fancy numbers:

The homer inspired this comparison from Cubs manager Joe Maddon:

Hitting a baseball 470 feet ties Schwarber for the second longest homer of the season. Ryan Zimmerman and Manny Machado have both gone 470. Jake Lamb has the longest homer of the year at 481 feet. But Schwarber’s left Wrigley Field, so that earns him some extra credit here.

The Cubs homered Cueto and the Giants into the ground. All four runs in their 4-1 win came by the longball. The others belonged to Jason Heyward (a solo dinger) and Anthony Rizzo (a two-run shot). And all four came against Cueto, who’s carrying an uncharacteristic 4.64 ERA at this point.

For the Cubs — who are 23-21 and chasing the first-place Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central — the more homers the better, it would appear.
