Kyle Lowry's reported interest in 76ers a head-scratcher

“From north Philly to your city … ”

For years, Raptors fans had come to appreciate this little tidbit from Kyle Lowry’s nightly introduction as Toronto’s starting point guard. For years, it was simply a clever reminder that the Philadelphia native and three-time All-Star had found a new city north of the border to call home.

But with the latest report on Lowry’s upcoming free agency, “from north Philly … ” may begin to feel more like a harbinger of things to come for the Raptors’ faithful.

Two days after confirming his plan to opt out of his current contract and become a free agent, Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Lowry is interested in signing with the Philadelphia 76ers. And the interest appears to be mutual.

According to Pompey’s sources, the Sixers are planning to offer Lowry a “lucrative” contract when the point guard officially becomes a free agent on July 1. Sixers President Bryan Colangelo, in case you don’t recall, was Toronto’s general manager when the Raptors acquired Lowry in a trade with the Houston Rockets back in 2012. Lowry and Colangelo, as Pompey notes, have been “good friends” ever since.

The Raptors can offer Lowry more money than any other team, making Toronto the most lucrative option for Lowry. But money doesn’t appear to be top of his mind.

“A ring. Nothing else,” said Lowry when asked about his top priority in free agency. “I just want a ring.”

It’s this very statement that likely has Raptors fans scratching their heads. The Sixers are a long ways away from winning a championship as they’re likely to continue trusting the process for several more years.

Prior to Pompey’s report, the chatter around Lowry’s free agency centered around his rumoured interest in moving to the Western Conference. The San Antonio Spurs were seen as a viable candidate; with Tony Parker’s best days behind him, the Spurs could have a need at point guard. Teaming up with Coach Popovich and Kawhi Leonard would give Lowry a far better shot at the ring he seeks than the lowly Sixers.
