KU basketball recruiting: High school star from Alabama to visit; Jayhawks contact 5-star

Chase McCarty, a 6-foot-6, 190-pound senior-to-be small forward from Westminster Christian Academy in Huntsville, Alabama, will make an official recruiting visit to Kansas on June 5-7, 24/7 High School Hoops has reported.

McCarty, who is ranked No. 68 in the recruiting Class of 2024 by On3.com, No. 71 by 247sports.com and No. 98 by ESPN.com, has visited Mississippi and Houston. A member of the Atlanta Xpress AAU team, he also is being recruited by Oklahoma, Illinois, Harvard, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Cincinnati, Providence, Gonzaga, Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama, Tennessee and others.

According to Ryzehoops.com, KU was “the first blue blood program to offer the sharpshooter (Sept. 28, 2022) and join a number of high major programs in on his recruitment.”

McCarty’s dad, Kelly, is a former Southern Miss standout forward who played one season with the Denver Nuggets before a 14-year pro career in Russia and Israel. Chase McCarty’s sister is on Georgia’s swim team.

Westminster coach Ronnie Stapler told Tuscaloosanews.com that McCarty is the hardest worker he’s coached.

“He doesn’t take any days off. He probably should, but he doesn’t take any days off,” Stapler said.

Of McCarty, 24/7 High School Hoops wrote on Twitter: “McCarty is a two-way wing who has long arms and good strength. (He is) a very good defender and great finisher on the offensive end.”

TJB Scouting wrote on Twitter: “I’m a fan of Chase McCarty and what he brings to this @AtlXpress team. (He’s a) 6-foot-6 prospect that can fill it up from outside with his shooting ability. Has the length to be effective on the defensive side and hits the glass.”

Wrote Justin Young of Hoopseen.com: “I could make an argument that he was the best shooter from the weekend (at the recent Bob Gibbons AAU tourney). The stud from Alabama torched the nets 17 times for a three-pointer over the course of the weekend. He was dead-eye from deep, an absolute sniper. McCarty was one of the most appealing prospects in the Class of 2024 this spring and he wrapped up the April and May schedule with a bang. He was brilliant in this setting, justifying any top 50 national ranking that may follow him. Terrific collegiate prospect.”

Dylan Harper fares well at EYBL in Memphis

Dylan Harper, a 6-5, 180-pound senior-to-be shooting guard from Bosco Prep in Ramsey, New Jersey, who has a list of KU, Duke, Indiana, Rutgers and Auburn, fared well at the recent EYBL event in Memphis, according to On3.com.

“It’s very apparent that Dylan Harper is likely the best player every time he steps on the court,” wrote Joe Tipton of On3.com. “The 6-5 guard is steady, consistent, and selfless. He loves to get his teammates involved, always making the right read/pass. He can also go out and get you a bucket (or several). The game comes easily to him. He doesn’t have to score to affect winning. High IQ, great passer, understands the game. Great frame and really strong going to the basket,” Tipton added.

Harper is ranked No. 2 in the recruiting Class of 2024 by ESPN.com and No. 3 by Rivals.com.

Bethea stellar at tourney

Meanwhile, Jalil Bethea, 6-4, 175-pound senior-to-be point guard from Archbishop Wood Catholic High School in Warminster, Pennsylvania, was cited by On3.com for stellar play in Sunday’s action at the EYBL event.

“He was terrific as a shot maker, both off the catch and off the dribble,” wrote Tipton. “An elite scorer. he knocked down several threes. Proving to be one if the top guards in class of 2024. UConn, Syracuse, Miami, Villanova, Kansas, and others are recruiting him.”

Isaiah Elohim hears from KU, K-State

Isaiah Elohim, a 6-5, 200-pound senior-to-be shooting guard from Sierra Canyon High in Chatsworth, California, told 24/7 High School Hoops he’s “hearing the most lately” from coaches from KU, Kansas State, UCLA, Arkansas, Michigan State and USC.

He’s ranked No. 11 in the recruiting Class of 2024 by ESPN.com and No. 29 by Rivals.com.

“The 6-foot-5, 190-pound Elohim has excellent size, speed, and athleticism. He also has a good shot and excels at scoring the ball from around the court. It’s easy to envision him being the kind of guy in the future who can drop a flurry of jumpers and take over a game,” wrote spartanshadows.com. “Elohim is currently attending Sierra Canyon in Los Angeles, Calif. This is a big-time basketball school that has produced plenty of NBA talent, including Kenyon Martin Jr. and current Detroit Piston Marvin Bagley. It’s also the same school that Bronny James attended. The fact that Elohim was able to excel at such a prestigious basketball school (against excellent competition) gives me plenty of confidence that he can translate to the next level.”
