Kristen Wiig returns as her 'Saturday Night Live' character Target Lady in a new ad for Target

Clear the aisles — Target Lady is back!

Kristen Wiig reprised her iconic Saturday Night Live role for a series of new Target ads timed to the brand’s Circle Week, beginning with a teaser shared on the brand’s Instagram account on Tuesday.

From the moment she wakes up in the short ad, Target Lady is ready for action – and even her alarm clock is in uniform, donning a hilarious matching version of her blunt bob hairdo as it wakes her up for another exciting day as a cashier. As she gets out of bed, she puts on red fuzzy slippers with the Target circle logo on them before getting in a morning workout.

Using the Target checkout lane as a makeshift treadmill, Target Lady gears up for her day as Prince’s “Baby I’m a Star” plays in the background. She then faces an impossible choice as she gets dressed for the day: which of the identical red vests emblazoned with the Target circle logo will she put on? And which pair of white Keds sneakers with red laces will she wear today?

After getting dressed, applying her go-to dark nude lipstick shade and giving her signature bangs a fresh trim, Wiig, 50, makes an appropriately Target themed breakfast – using Target brand fruit jam, of course — before diving into her day literally head-first through a slide that’ll take her into the store for another dream come true day as a Target cashier.

“HOLD ONTO YOUR CARTS! 🛒 Target Lady is back for #TargetCircleWeek, 4/7-4/13,” the brand wrote in the caption of the post, which sees Wiig’s first return as the chatty cashier since 2013.

It's a character she originated before she began her career at SNL in 2005, and she reportedly included the bit in her audition for the late night sketch comedy role, which led it to become a breakout role for her, per The Wrap. Wiig has reprised the role on SNL nine times, though the new Target ad marks its first non-SNL appearance.

In a press release, Wiig said it was “so fun” to bring the character back “after all this time,” noting the more than a decade that has passed since she’s visited the role on SNL.

"Target Lady is incredibly special to me because it's one of the characters I created at The Groundlings and ended up on SNL,” she said, referencing her time at the L.A. improv school early in her career.

Target’s executive vice president and chief marketing officer Lisa Roath said it was “only fitting” to partner with Wiig to “create some memorable new laughs courtesy of the one and only Target Lady.”

“Like so many, we’re big fans of Kristen Wiig and her iconic Target Lady character from Saturday Night Live,” Roath said in a statement, adding that the beloved character is the perfect way to “introduce the new Target Circle and thousands of new deals during Target Circle Week.”

The brand worked with Wiig and former SNL writer Jameson Anderson to craft the campaign, which includes 12 ad spots that will air across TV and social media.
