“He knows he made a mistake” – Bruno Fernandes tips Man United teammate to bounce back from howler
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana committed another blunder on Thursday night, but his captain Bruno Fernandes jumped to his defence.
The Red Devils were keen to grab all three points from their away Europa League contest against Viktoria Plzen. However, the Cameroonian made life difficult for the Red Devils with a poor pass to Matthijs de Ligt that was intercepted by Pavel Sulc who set up the assist for Matej Vydra.
Thankfully for Onana, Rasmus Hojlund came to the rescue following his introduction, turning the result upside down with a clinical brace that earned the Premier League giants a crucial victory.
Nevertheless, the custodian’s blunder was hardly forgotten, especially since it came on the back of an abysmal showing in Nottingham last Saturday. The 27-year-old’s form is thus raising the alarm bells at United, evoking memories of last season’s early calamities when Onana was committing mistakes week in week out before eventually finding his feet at Carrington.
Nevertheless, Fernandes insists that these missteps are normal, especially for a club that aspires to build from the back.
“We want to play from the back,” said the Red Devils captain in his post-match interview with TNT Sports (via Sky Sports).
Bruno Fernandes defends Man United teammate Andre Onana
“We have to make the decision that is the right one. Andre thought that Matty could get to the ball, he missed the pass, they scored a goal, but that’s nothing that we have to focus about.
“You have to focus on what’s the best solution that we can do it in the future, but it’s not about Andre making the mistake. We don’t look at individuals here when something happens in the wrong side or the good side.”
Therefore, the Portuguese playmaker expects Onana to bounce back and produce the goods in the upcoming contests.
“We have huge belief in Andre. He knows he made a mistake, we don’t need to tell him, and he’s going to help us many times coming out from the back. We trust his qualities on the ball.”
