Kingsley Coman considering international retirement

France international and Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman (28) is considering international retirement, according to a report from L’Equipe. The outlet reports that the 8-time Bundesliga winner with Bayern had a bad experience of the Euros with Les Bleus. Kingsley Coman only played 15 minutes in the tournament, coming off the bench to replace Ousmane Dembélé in France’s second group-stage game against The Netherlands (0-0).

L’Equipe mentions that Kingsley Coman had put a lot of hard work into returning from injury to claim a spot in Didier Deschamps’ 25-man squad. The Bayern winger sustained a hamstring injury in the latter stages of the Bundesliga season, putting in jeopardy his place at the Euros. The outlet adds that Kingsley Coman has never considered the prospect of a long career in professional football and the Euros have “scarred” him. So much so that Coman is contemplating whether or not to continue donning France’s blue jersey. The fact Deschamps has been confirmed as France manager until the 2026 World Cup may play a part in his thinking.

Kingsley Coman would not be the first France international in recent years to hang up his boots at international level at a relatively young age. Raphaël Varane announced his international retirement at 29, on the back of France’s loss against Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final. Like Varane, the 28-year-old Coman’s international debut came very early – at 19 for his part – and his career has been disrupted by frequent injuries. The PSG youth product has logged eight goals and five assists in 57 appearances for Les Bleus.
