Barcelona star Gavi would likely have been part of Spain’s Euro 2024 effort had he not been struck down by a tragic anterior cruciate ligament injury last November. Gavi also tore his meniscus and is expected to be out until at least October. At least King Felipe VI thinks so.

The 19-year-old midfielder spent Wednesday evening not watching England get past the Netherlands, but aat an awards ceremony in Girona, at the Princess of Girona gala. The gala took place at the Palace of Congress in Lloret de Mar on the coast, and also saw Princess Leonor attend. During the encounter, Gavi crossed paths with the King, who according to Sport told him that “We’ll see each other in Berlin, you can’t miss it, you’re part of this team.” King Felipe is of course referring to the Euro 2024 final, with Spain taking on England at the Olmypiastadion on Sunday night.

No encounter was recorded between Gavi and Princess Leonor. Famously it was reported that the Princess of Asturias was a big admirer of Gavi, and a couple of years ago had one of her schoolbooks covered in pictures of him. Following Spain’s victory against Costa Rica in the 2022 Qatar World Cup, King Felipe was also seen in the Spain dressing room, and asked Gavi to sign a shirt for him. It did not go unnoticed that the shirt was a few sizes too small for the King himself.
