Kiefer Sherwood Ties Canucks Single-Season Hits Record
Forty-seven games into his Vancouver Canucks career, Kiefer Sherwood has already tied a franchise record. When he threw his 273rd hit of the season on Thursday night against the Edmonton Oilers, Sherwood tied Luke Schenn for the most hits in a season in franchise history. Schenn has held the record since 2021-22, when the current Nashville Predators defenceman recorded 273 hits in 66 games.

Sherwood has been a hitting machine this season. As of January 24, he has a 96-hit lead on Philadelphia Flyers' Garnet Hathaway, who currently sits at 177. Sherwood's 273 hits also rank 32nd all-time in franchise history, with the Canucks winger already surpassing players like Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin, Chris Tanev and Quinn Hughes.
While Sherwood's name will appear in Vancouver's record book, it is important to note that hits were not always tracked and recorded. According to the NHL's stat page, the first recorded season was 2005-06, when Ryan Kesler led the team with 136 hits in 82 games. That being said, Sherwood's accomplishment should not be diminished, as no one except Schenn has thrown as many hits a season over the past two decades.
Up next for Sherwood will be breaking the NHL's all-time single-season hit record, which Jeremy Lauzon currently holds. The Predators defenceman set the record last season by recording 383 hits in 79 games. With 35 games remaining, Sherwood needs to average 3.14 hits per night in order to set the record.
