Khabib Nurmagomedov’s involvement in a post-fight melee at UFC 229 has rightfully drawn scorn and possible punishment.

But it did nothing to dampen the sense of national pride around the Russian fighter, who received a congratulatory phone call from President Vladimir Putin after his victory over Conor McGregor.

Khabib greeted with a hero’s welcome

Back in Russia Monday, the undefeated UFC lightweight champion garnered adoration of the masses.

Fans rallied at a 26,000-seat stadium in the Russian Republic of Dagestan to greet their champion. And they were amped.

As shown here from Russia-based MMA reporter Denis Geyko, the stands at the soccer stadium were packed.

Khabib met his fans carrying his championship belt.

When given the chance, fans swarmed the pitch to get a closer glimpse of their hero.

It’s good to be the champ.
