Keyshawn Davis vs. Denys Berinchyk official for WBO lightweight title in February
Keyshawn Davis is set for his maiden world title shot.
The American lightweight contender will challenge Ukraine's Denys Berinchyk for Berinchyk's WBO lightweight championship at Madison Square Garden's The Theatre in New York on Feb. 14, Top Rank announced Tuesday afternoon.
The bout will be promoted by Bob Arum's Top Rank and televised live on ESPN.
Davis (12-0, 8 KOs), a 2020 Olympic silver medalist, halted Gustavo Lemos in just two rounds in November in front of more than 9,000 fans in his hometown of Norfolk, Virginia. To put the performance in context, Lemos had previously pushed Richardson Hitchins — now the IBF super lightweight champion — across 12 ultra competitive rounds, which ended with Hitchins edging a razor-thin decision win.
Berinchyk (19-0, 9 KOs) won the vacant WBO championship in May, upsetting the three-division champion Emanuel Navarrete by split decision in San Diego. The Ukrainian previously held the European title he won in December 2022 against Yvan Mendy on the Tyson Fury vs. Derek Chisora undercard.
Davis called out WBA lightweight champion Gervonta "Tank" Davis after his win over Lemos. Should he beat Berinchyk, the "Tank" fight would be a rare lightweight unification clash and a major attraction in the U.S.
Cuba's Andy Cruz, who defeated Davis four times in the amateur ranks, returns later on Jan. 25 in Las Vegas against Omar Salcido and is also looking to face Davis in the pro ranks.
Puerto Rican super welterweight Xander Zayas (20-0, 12 KOs) meets Germany's Slawa Spomer (20-0, 11 KOs) in the Feb. 14 co-feature. Zayas is the WBO's No. 1-ranked contender at 154 pounds for unified champion Sebastian Fundora.
Also on the show, Vito Mielnicki Jr. (20-1, 12 KOs) battles Ireland's Connor Coyle (21-0, 9 KOs) in a middleweight bout, and top prospect Abdullah Mason (16-0, 14 KOs) clashes with Manuel Jaimes (16-2-1, 11 KOs).
