Kansas City Current’s historic CPKC Stadium will host the 2024 NWSL championship game

CPKC Stadium has been open for less than six months, and it’s already widely been considered a success. So it’s no surprise that yet another marquee event is headed to the home of the Kansas City Current.

The National Women’s Soccer League announced on Wednesday morning that the 2024 NWSL championship game will be held at CPKC Stadium. The game on Saturday, November 23, will be a 7 p.m. kickoff and televised on CBS (streaming on Paramount+).

“CPKC Stadium epitomizes the explosive growth and investment we are witnessing in the NWSL, women’s soccer and women’s sports around the world,” NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman said. “It was a natural choice to stage the league’s marquee event in a venue that exemplifies the profound impact of infrastructure, investment and community support on the continued development and success of our sport. We thank the KC Current organization for their partnership in bringing this event to their community and look forward to celebrating the 2024 season finale in November.”

The Current has played eight home games at CPKC Stadium, all sellouts at 11,500 in listed attendance. Overall, attendance is up around the NWSL, as the league as already surpassed 1 million fans, and broadcast viewership is up 95% from the 2023 season to date.

“We are so excited to host the world at our home,” Kansas City Current co-owner Angie Long said in a statement. “CPKC Stadium is the first stadium built for moments like these. We are excited to show everyone the unparalleled match experience in a stadium for players, fans and those watching on TV. It is an honor to host the NWSL Championship, and Kansas City is ready for the moment.”

The Kansas City Current is on the right track to play in that game, too. Unbeaten in its last 17 games dating back to the 2023 season’s final two matches, the club is tied atop the NWSL standings with the Orlando Pride. The two teams will play Saturday.

If the Current does finish in the top 2 in the NWSL standings, it will have a home-field run throughout the playoffs. The Current last appeared in the NWSL championship game in 2022, losing 2-0 to the Portland Thorns at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.

Last year’s NWSL championship game was hosted at Snapdragon Stadium and won by New Jersey/New York Gotham FC 2-1 over the OL Reign (now Seattle Reign).
