Are the Kansas City Chiefs ‘(South) America’s Team?’ One study says yes

Based on Google searches alone, it seems that three NFL teams have taken the world by storm.

In a recent study conducted by the betting company FlashPicks, the Kansas City Chiefs were found to be among the most “popular” teams across the league — and not just in KC or the United States, but much farther out.

How did they arrive at this conclusion?

It was simple ... ish.

A team from FlashPicks analyzed Google search volume in more than 100 countries to figure out how many times each NFL team was searched for over the past four years.

After that, every team was given a score between 0 and 10. Leading the way in 26 different countries — including all 12 in South America — were the Chiefs, with a score of 9.1. Just ahead of them were the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills with scores of 9.8 and 9.9, respectively.

“The popularity of the NFL continues to grow around the world,” FlashPicks head of operations Callum Broxton said in a release, “with games being played in new territories over the past decade and expansion to Brazil for 2024, as well as the ever-growing rumors of a franchise in Europe.

“Our study shows that the Buffalo Bills, Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs are leading the way with attracting fans to their teams.”

Last year, Kansas City defeated the Miami Dolphins 21-14 in Frankfurt, Germany. That country made the list of 26 in which the Chiefs led the way. It is worth noting that Miami didn’t receive the same love, so to speak, from fans who watched them a little under a year ago.

Kenya, South Africa and Uganda, as well as Zimbabwe, joined the list of countries the Chiefs topped. Even with the vast spread, South America had the highest concentration of countries searching for the Chiefs — and likely for another reason other than star quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his three Super Bowl titles in five years.

Taylor Swift, the superstar singer and girlfriend of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, made stops on her “Eras Tour” in both Argentina and Brazil — two other countries on the list. Swift became the first female artist to perform three shows on a single tour at Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos in Rio de Janeiro and then broke the attendance records for a three-day span and single day at Allianz Parque in São Paulo.

Fans of Swift were quick to jump on the Chiefs’ bandwagon once the singer’s relationship with Kelce became public, so it makes sense that two of the countries, among the others in South America, would be searching up the Chiefs.

Whether it’s Swift, Mahomes or Kansas City winning back-to-back Super Bowl championships, there is plenty of buzz surrounding the Chiefs, and apparently not just in the United States.

The Cowboys might proclaim themselves to be “America’s Team,” but it seems as if the Chiefs now have the right to a similar moniker.

Perhaps they can be “South America’s Team.”
