'It Was Just Win That Period, Win A Game': Sebastian Aho, Jalen Chatfield, Rod Brind'Amour On Win In Philly

The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 Wednesday night thanks to a trio of third-period goals.

Jalen Chatfield, Sebastian Aho — who his franchise record 58th game-winning goal — Jordan Staal and Jack Roslovic all scored for Carolina while Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 18 shots in the victory.

After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour along with Aho and Chatfield spoke with the media. Here's what they had to say:

Rod Brind'Amour

On if he felt like his team wore the Flyers down to get that third-period burst:
I think it was more about getting to [our game]. I don't think we really established anything for two periods. We were just kind of going through the motions, but thankfully the game was still there. Then I thought we got to it the way we kind of hope to play and got rewarded.

On Ivan Fedotov: He made a few or a couple where you thought like, 'Oh man.' And that's what a goalie has to do to keep their team in a game. He was good tonight. Our guy was good too. He had some tricky ones. I thought both guys did a good job in that department.

On what he liked about his team's performance: I liked how we answered in the third. I thought the game was there and that we needed to make a statement. I didn't love the first two periods, that's for sure, but again, you have another team and they're doing their thing. I thought it was just a collectively good effort in the third.

On Sebastian Aho's two-way ability: He has to play that way. That's the kind of player he is so you got to do what you do. It's not just about scoring. Because when you're not scoring, I think that was his first 5v5 goal all year, you have to be doing the other things and he does. Hopefully this jumpstarts him and gets that department going.

On Aho breaking Ron Francis' game-winning goal record: I've said it before when he did something else to pass somebody: He's going to be the franchise leader in everything when it's all said and done and he should be. He's going to be the best player that's played here. He's not an old guy either yet, so that's not surprising.

On returning to Philadelphia: It's always nice. You know, it's been long. 25 years. When I was coming back as a player it felt way different because it was newer. Now, nobody knows who the hell I am. But it's always nice.

Sebastian Aho

On the game:
Obviously we had a good start. Go one up in the first shift so it was a good job on that, but up till halfway through the game, we were kind of meh. They had some maybe too many looks and they score there, it's a different game obviously. So I mean, I felt like the end of the second period and the third period was pretty solid, but overall it could have been better.

On his goal: Got a turnover there, cut inside and just kind of let it rip.

On the team's strong start to the season: I feel like we've been playing a pretty similar way for a long time, not just this season. I feel like now we have guys maybe in a bigger role who are taking that step to carry the team. [Martin Necas] for example has been a really good player for us the whole year. Just need to keep building on what we have here. I do believe we have to be consistent throughout the year.

On quick starts: It's huge. I mean, you try to get a quick start every night. Obviously the other team tries to do the same so it's not always the easiest, but that's a big thing in our locker room. We want to start on time and that basically got us the win today.

On Ivan Fedotov: He played a good game, I thought. Personally, the puck hadn't gone too much into the net so it's all about not trying to get frustrated. Happy that I got one there and won the game.

On breaking Ron Francis' fame-winning goal franchise record: That's special obviously. Having my name next to that kind of legend and in the same sentence is special. Obviously everyone knows what he did for the game and how good of a player he was. Obviously I've probably done something right to be able to at least be in the same sentence as that guy. Hopefully a lot, lot more to come.

Jalen Chatfield

On the game:
We've gotta learn from this game, the good and the bad and we have to get right back at it tomorrow. We can't focus on the past, ever, and we know that as a group. We have an experienced group, we have a lot of good leaders and we try to bring it every night. Some night it doesn't start the best, but we always find our game and once we do that, we're fine.

On sticking with the game: That's it every night. We know if we play the way we play, we have a chance to win. Sometimes in hockey, you get weird bounces and you can't control those things, but we just have to stay consistent. Consistency in every part of the game and making sure we play a full 60 minutes. If we have a bad first period, bad second period, it's whatever. We have to move on and win a hockey game. Going into the third, it was a tied up game, so it was just win that period, win a game.
