Manchester United sustained a 10th Premier League defeat of the campaign after falling to a 3-1 loss at the hands of Brighton and Hove Albion yesterday.

As a result, the Reds sit 13th-placed in the division and are a whopping 12 points away from the Champions League places – as well as seven points adrift of the mid-table mark.

Goals from Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter sealed the Seagulls’ second league double over United in three seasons, with the latter’s goal being entirely gifted to the visitors thanks to a catastrophic mistake from Andre Onana

The ‘keeper pounced off his line to claim a low cross before palming the ball straight into Rutter’s path, allowing the forward to brush past Matthijs de Ligt and slot his strike into an open net.

A tumultuous tenure for Onana in M16

Onana was targeted to succeed longstanding servant David de Gea ahead of the 2023/2024 season. Erik ten Hag spearheaded United’s pursuit – again opting to reunite with a player he’d already coached rather than another highly-rated alternative.

To sanction his arrival, the club forked out £47.2 million to cut his Inter Milan tenure short prematurely; he spent only one season in Italy after his Ajax departure but couldn’t pass up the opportunity to join the 20-time champions.

He has, however, accumulated quite the catalogue of costly blunders since making his move, especially in his maiden term. Yet, the 28-year-old remains firmly cemented as Ruben Amorim’s No.1 between the sticks.

Reacting to yet another dismal showing from Onana on Sunday, Samuel Luckhurst highlighted two areas of his game that are proving detrimental to United’s results.

“Another problem with Onana, aside from him chucking the ball in, is he does not appear to be a ball-playing goalie any more,” the MEN journalist said. “United fans regularly get exasperated with how long he takes to play the ball out. He promised to take ‘risks’ in pre-season, and there haven’t been any.”
