Are Liverpool Still Eyeing Anthony Gordon for Future Move?

Liverpool supporters are growing restless as the summer transfer window progresses with minimal activity from their club. Known for their proactive approach in the market, the Reds have taken a more deliberate stance this year under new head coach Arne Slot. Whether this strategy will pay off remains to be seen, but it’s clear that the club must make moves soon if they are to bolster their squad for the upcoming season.

Potential Move for Anthony Gordon

One intriguing rumour that has captured the attention of the Liverpool fanbase is the potential signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United. Journalist David Lynch, speaking to Anfield Agenda, revealed that Gordon was offered to Liverpool for around £85m in June. Although Liverpool initially balked at the price, Lynch suggests there’s “a real chance” they could revisit the deal under the right conditions.

“On Anthony Gordon I think that’s one that has a real chance of being revived maybe later in the window,” Lynch tells Anfield Agenda. “Because that contract situation is there. That leaves Newcastle in a weak position in terms of negotiating even though they’ve got past all the PSR trouble that they’ve got. The player would desperately love to play for Liverpool and there’s all that reported interest in Luis Diaz.”

Lynch’s insight hints at a potential revival of the deal, but he also notes that any move for Gordon would likely hinge on the departure of Luis Diaz, a scenario that currently seems unlikely.

The Luis Diaz Factor

Diaz’s future at Liverpool appears secure for now, which complicates the potential acquisition of Gordon. As Lynch explains, “Now, that interest [in Diaz] has to become something, there has to be a bid come in and it has to be right for Liverpool for a sale. They’re not going to just kick him out the door.”

If Liverpool were to receive a substantial offer for Diaz, it could trigger a series of events leading to Gordon’s arrival. However, without a concrete bid for Diaz, the chances of signing Gordon this summer remain slim. Lynch emphasizes that Liverpool admire Gordon, and with his contract set to expire in two years, Newcastle’s negotiating position could weaken, making a future move more feasible.

Strategic Patience

While the immediate prospects of Gordon joining Liverpool seem uncertain, the groundwork for a potential future move is being laid. Lynch believes that Liverpool are positioning themselves for a strategic play, likely targeting Gordon for a move in 2025 when his contract has just one year remaining. This strategy could allow Liverpool to refresh their left-hand side without overpaying.

“Anthony Gordon is a player we know they admire, absolutely no doubts about that and with his contract with just two years remaining, they would sense Newcastle’s weakness there and very much put it to the test. That’s my belief,” Lynch states.

Patience will be key for Liverpool fans hoping to see Gordon in red. The club’s calculated approach suggests they are willing to wait for the right moment to strike, ensuring they get the best possible deal.

Liverpool’s Waiting Game

The transfer window is always a time of speculation and anticipation, and this summer is no different for Liverpool supporters. While the prospect of signing Anthony Gordon this summer seems unlikely unless circumstances change dramatically, the club’s interest in the player is evident. By laying the groundwork now, Liverpool are positioning themselves for a future move that could significantly strengthen their squad.

As David Lynch aptly puts it, “The one thing that’s for certain is that this is far from over.” Liverpool’s transfer strategy may be slower this year, but it is clear and calculated, setting the stage for potential future successes.
