Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim has emerged as one of the contenders for the Manchester United job following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag this morning, according to Florian Plettenberg.

United recently enquired into his availability, as they had been preparing for Ten Hag’s departure. There were talks, but they were informed that he isn’t planning to leave Sporting in the winter. He could leave in the summer as he has a release clause.

Ten Hag was sacked following the loss to hapless West Ham that left the Premier League giants in 14th place. It was the fourth defeat already in the league, and United’s European campaign somehow looks even worse.

The Reds have drawn all three games in the Europa League and sit in 21st place on the table. United needed new ideas, and the Dutchman was relieved of his duties.

Man United have now started the process of finding a new permanent manager, and one option for the Red Devils is the young and charismatic Amorim, who has been linked with a move to the Premier League before.

Amorim has admirers in Chelsea, Liverpool, and West Ham. All three considered him before making their recent managerial appointments. Manchester City also have him on their radar as they eye a Pep Guardiola successor.

Amorim’s first season at Sporting saw him deliver their long-awaited league title, ending a 19-year drought. He clinched the title again last term, adding to his trophy cabinet, which houses three Portuguese Cups and one Super Cup.

The 39-year-old has had to play down comparisons to Jose Mourinho, with many in his country dubbing him the second coming of the former Man United boss.

Tactically, Amorim’s Sporting never deviate from their 3-4-2-1 shape, but they play attractive football.

However, there are serious questions over whether his style will translate to the Premier League, which has led to hesitation in England around hiring him.

Also, there is the question of whether the United squad is a good fit for the Portuguese tactician.

While he is an exciting option, there are also reportedly many other names on the United shortlist, like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Xavi Hernandez, and Graham Potter, and the club will take its time to decide.
