Josefine Jakobsen Announces Retirement

International hockey star Josefine Jakobsen, a legend with Team Denmark, has announced her retirement after injuries forced her to the sideline.

33-year-old Danish star Josefine Jakobsen moved to Sweden at 17 to pursue her dream of playing at the highest possible level. She tallied 128 points in 75 games for Segeltorps in Riksserien (the predecessor to the SDHL) and won two championships before accepting a NCAA D1 scholarship to attend the University of North Dakota. Jakobsen excelled too at UND, where she put up 137 points (59+78) in four seasons. Upon graduation, Jakobsen returned to Sweden, where she starred for Djurgårdens IF and again won the SDHL Championship in 2016-17.

Jakobsen’s impact on Danish hockey cannot be ignored. As team captain in 2018-19, she tallied eight points in five games to lead Denmark to gold at the Division 1A World Championship, and subsequently, the nation’s first appearance in the top group. In 2022, Jakobsen was an instrumental part of the Danish team that qualified for and competed in the country’s first ever Olympic Games.

“It was a difficult decision to make, but it is the right decision,” said Jakobsen in an interview on brynas.se. “Right now, it’s extremely difficult. I don’t feel like I’m finished with hockey at all, but in the future I’m sure I will be grateful for every experience I have been through.”

Injuries limited Jakobsen to only three appearances for Brynäs over the past two seasons. She ends her illustrious SDHL career with three championships and 343 points (158+185) in 310 games.
