Jose Mourinho ‘hopes’ young Euro 2024 winner ends up signing for Real Madrid
Real Madrid are always linked with the biggest stars in world football, but it has come to notice in recent times that the club’s Spanish core is on a slow and certain decline.
After Nacho Fernandez’s departure, Dani Carvajal is the only player in the dressing room who is of Spanish origin and is an undisputed starter, with Dani Ceballos’ future far from certain.
As such, it is no secret that the club are looking to improve their Spanish core once more.
Signing players who are integral to the national team setup, thus, appears to be a good place to start for they represent the creme-de-la-creme of the nation’s talent pool. Jose Mourinho made an interesting pick on that front recently.
Mourinho’s dream signing for Real Madrid
Speaking to the media in a recent video, the former Real Madrid manager revealed that he wishes Athletic Club star Nico Williams would sign for Los Blancos in the coming years.
“In the Euros, people were all saying Yamal, Yamal, Yamal. He’s a wonderful boy, but I, personally, prefer more of Nico Williams,” he began, making it clear that signing the Spanish winger would also serve as a direct response to Lamine Yamal’s rise at Barcelona.
“I hope he ends up at Real Madrid,” he added, as revealed by Fabrizio Romano.
Interestingly, Nico has been linked more widely with a move to Barcelona than to Real Madrid as the Catalans even had him as their top transfer target for the last summer transfer window.
His strong bond with Yamal was seen as the pioneering force to ensure his signing, although he finally preferred staying in the Basque country for one more year.
His numbers for club this season have not been as phenomenal, but he may emerge as an option to leave Athletic Club next summer and it remains to be seen if Real Madrid concur with Mourinho’s stance.
Prime facie, however, it would appear to be a disharmonious move for the club to already have Vinicius Jr, Kylian Mbappe and Rodrygo Goes fighting for the starting spot on the left wing. Nico Williams would only add up as another contender.
