Ultra-reliable football journalist Fabrizio Romano has stated that Manchester United’s relationship with agent Jorge Mendes could be vital in their chances of securing Manuel Ugarte’s signature.

After an impressive start to the window, where the Red Devils expertly captured young talents like Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro, the club’s focus is now to bring in a midfielder to bolster the squad.

It was reported last night that United had already agreed personal terms with Manuel Ugarte and were in discussion with Paris Saint-Germain over a fee.

The biggest issue the club now faces is that they reportedly have to sell to buy in any position they want to strengthen due to PSR restrictions.

Scott McTominay could be one to depart with the academy graduate being linked with a move to Fulham, Galatasaray and Tottenham Hotspur.

Casemiro is also said to be the subject of interest from Saudi Arabia, even though some reports have suggested that the club is finding it difficult to sell the veteran.

In an update this morning, Fabrizio Romano added to the news on Ugarte last night and claimed, “United already have the green light for Manuel Ugarte as a potential new midfielder, the contract has been discussed and – this is an important detail – with the same agent who takes care of Leny Yoro, Jorge Mendes.”

Romano underlined the importance Jorge Mendes could play in a deal as he “is still a very big name, obviously, in the market, and Manchester United also have a very good relationship with Paris Saint-Germain – another important point.”

“If PSG receive the right proposal this is a story that could be a concrete one in the next days, in the next few weeks.”

An interesting sidenote is that Mendes is also the agent of United target Joao Neves, who seems to be edging towards a move to PSG.

Therefore, United should have the inside track on a deal for both players even though the French club appear clear favourites at this point for the Portuguese teenager.

Nonetheless, AC Milan were ahead for Zirkzee and Real Madrid thought Yoro was wrapped up before United’s new sporting team got on the case, so never say never.

In all likelihood though, it seems that United’s strong relationship with the agent and PSG might prove decisive in securing a deal for Ugarte. Whether that is for a reduced fee or a loan this year with an obligation to buy next year is yet to be seen.
