Tootoo's mother, Rose, confirmed her son is now in New Jersey.
He'll be competing for a position as forward, against Ruslan Fedotenko and Scott Gomez.
Rose says she spoke with her son yesterday and wished him luck.
Tootoo is from Rankin Inlet.
He played with the Detroit Red Wings for two years before being dropped by the team at the end of last season.
