Jonathan David attracts Juventus interest as Arsenal also linked
Jonathan David, currently with Lille, has emerged as a prime target for Juventus, who are assessing their attacking options for next season.
Arsenal have also reportedly entered the race as they seek to strengthen their frontline.
The Lille forward, whose contract expires in June, demonstrated his quality with a goal against Juventus in their recent Champions League clash, but he had already caught the Old Lady’s attention before that. The 24-year-old has been prolific in Ligue 1, scoring 97 goals in 201 appearances.
During a UEFA lunch between club officials, including Juventus representatives Cristiano Giuntoli and Giorgio Chiellini, David’s future was reportedly ‘barely mentioned’ as “the French line has been known for some time”.
That ‘line’ is that Lille have priced David at around €15m – €20 million for a January move, which could be attractive given his availability as a free agent in the summer.
Juventus, already facing financial constraints after significant summer spending, are cautious about a January outlay but remain hopeful of securing David once his contract expires.
With Arsenal now showing interest, competition for his signature is expected to be fierce.
Arsenal, dealing with uncertainty over Gabriel Jesus, are closely monitoring David’s situation, writes Corriere dello Sport. Mikel Arteta could see David as a key addition, providing depth and an alternative option up front.
Liverpool and Manchester United are also reportedly interested, further heating up the race.
David’s profile as both a goalscorer and playmaker makes him a compelling target for top clubs. Juventus manager Thiago Motta prefers a move for David in June when the financial terms may be more viable.
Pairing David with Dusan Vlahovic (who has also been linked with Arsenal but usually only when his agent wants to get him a new deal) could give Juventus a formidable attack, though Arsenal’s promise of regular Premier League football (and higher wages) could be an appealing factor.
Lille manager Bruno Genesio praised David’s composure after the match against Juventus. “Jonathan is glacial in front of goal. If he misses the first opportunity, he doesn’t miss the second,” Genesio said. David’s efficiency was evident in the Champions League encounter, where he converted his only chance.
The Canadian, who joined Lille in 2020 to replace Victor Osimhen, appears ready for a new challenge. Both Juventus and Arsenal offer platforms for career growth, but any January move hinges on financial feasibility.
Juventus must also manage upcoming expenses, including a €60 million allocation for other squad players and potentially replacing defender Bremer.
As the January window approaches, David’s future remains uncertain. What is clear is that his performance against Juventus has amplified interest from major European clubs, with both Serie A and Premier League giants positioning themselves for his services.
