Jon Gruden explains what makes new Bears HC Ben Johnson so special
With Ben Johnson becoming the 19th head coach in Chicago Bears history, there has been plenty of positive reaction to the news, including from former and current coaches around the NFL. One of those coaches, a polarizing figure in the NFL now working for Barstool Sports, is former Las Vegas Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach, and Super Bowl champion, Jon Gruden.
Before the news of Johnson's hiring was announced, Gruden appeared on the "Pardon My Take" podcast and explained, in his mind, what makes Johnson so special. For Gruden, most of what Johnson excelled at with his time in Detroit may not be observed by the casual eye, and that's winning at the line of scrimmage during the pre-snap process.
"He does a lot, pre-snap. What I love about Detroit is they win in the pre-snap, meaning they'll change the tight end, they'll change the wide receiver, they'll motion two or three times before the ball is snapped, and they'll let Jared Goff pick a play," Gruden said about what Johnson excelled at during his time with the Lions, further explaining how that process opens up the offense to read the defense.
"They're using the pre-snap to recognize the defense. You recognize the defense, and when you know what defense they're in, you communicate a play to beat that defense. That's what leads to great levels of execution."
Crediting the weapons that Johnson had in Detroit on all levels of their offense, Gruden believes the talent, and the pre-snap techniques he installed is why Johnson saw plenty of success with the Lions before agreeing to take his first head coaching job in the NFL. It would be wise for the Bears to supply him with the talent to make those schemes and pre-snap reads available, and it all begins with quarterback Caleb Williams.
