JoJo Siwa admits she's 'not the inventor of gay pop' but is willing to be the chief marketing officer

Siwa recently said she wanted to create a new genre of music that was lowkey created before she was born.

After JoJo Siwa said she wanted to "invent" a genre of music called gay pop, the internet brought out its collective reading glasses and gave the singer/dancer the once-over.

Speaking with TMZ, Siwa walked back her previous comments, acknowledging that there were indeed other, gayer pop purveyors who came before her.

"I definitely am not the inventor of gay pop, for sure not," Siwa admitted. "But I do want to be a piece in making it bigger than it already is. I want to bring more attention to it."

The gay confusion came after an interview with Billboard.

"When I first signed with Columbia I said I wanted to start a new genre of music...gay pop," Siwa said. The 20-year-old went on to compare the proposed genre with the jazz-funk style of dance, a fusion of jazz and hip-hop. Which would make gay pop a fusion of pop and...gay, we suppose?

The Dance Moms alum then gave a few song examples of what she meant: "Applause" and "Judas" by Lady Gaga, "On My Own" and "Can't Be Tamed" by Miley Cyrus, and she also name-drops her own single "Karma." What gay pop is not, according to the singer/dancer, however is Katy Perry's "California Gurls."

Siwa's comments generated a slew of side-eyes, including a silent "Really, ma'am?" from queer pop pioneers Tegan and Sara. Siwa said she even got it from Betty Who, and she's friends with Betty Who. Then of course, there are the pop foregays like David Bowie, Elton John, Little Richard, not to mention the Madonna of it all. Given that, Siwa is ready to give up title of "inventor" and settle for something a little less flashy.

"I'm not the creator," she told TMZ, "I'm not the president, but I might be like the CEO, or CMO, chief marketing officer. I'm the CMO."

JoJo Siwa, CMO of Gay Pop. This, of course, will have to go by the board consisting of Charli XCX, Troye Sivan, Lil Nas X, Gaga, and the actual President of Gay Pop, Cher.
