Joining City an ‘important moment’ says Oyama

Aemu Oyama says joining Manchester City is an important moment in her young career as she aspires to become one of the world’s best.

The midfielder joins City from Waseda University in her native Japan on a deal which will keep her at the Joie Stadium until the summer of 2027.

A key figure in Japan’s youth teams in recent years, Oyama admits the opportunity to test herself in England and the UEFA Champions League was a key factor in her decision to join the Club.

The 20-year-old is one of Japan’s most exciting young talents and believes a move to City will provide a major boost to her rapid development.

“I think this is the biggest decision I have ever made,” Oyama said in her first interview as a City player.

“To become a successful international player, it was an important moment and turning point.

“I always wanted to play for this club, so I’m really happy.

“My dream is to play in the Champions League.  I came here to make that dream of mine come true with a team that plays the type of football I like.

“I have a wide vision, and I can create chances by passing in the way that the opposition team can’t imagine.  Also, I think I’m good at using my teammates. These are my strengths.”

Perhaps the biggest indication of Oyama’s potential quality at the top level came at the U20 World Cup last summer in Colombia.

The midfielder grabbed one goal and two assists as Japan reached the final, eventually losing out to North Korea.

Despite falling at the final hurdle, Oyama was one of the tournament’s standout performers and believes the experience has benefited her massively.

She said: “I played against players from different countries at many games and became aware of their speed and power that I hadn’t experienced in Japan.

“Especially at the World Cup finals, I was really impressed by each team’s competitive edge and goal scoring abilities.

“I faced with my weaknesses to prepare myself and I believe the efforts I had made showed during the games.

“I felt I could play at the world level and gained confidence as an attacker.”
