John Herdman considered favourite for TFC head coaching job

Last year, the Team Canada coach led the men's national side to its first World Cup appearance since 1986.

Canadian men's national team head coach John Herdman is considered the frontrunner to be the next head coach of Toronto FC, according to a report from Joshua Kloke and Tom Bogert of The Athletic.

Herdman and TFC have reportedly been in extended talks for the past several weeks, with a report from Aug. 14 first revealing the reported mutual interest.

The deal is not considered to be completed, but given Herdman's reported interest in the role, going so far as to have his representation proactively approach TFC about the position, there remains a belief the deal could make its way over the finish line in due time.

Toronto FC is in the midst of a disappointing season after making a pair of high-profile Italian signings just over a year ago. The club first brought on midfielder Lorenzo Insigne from Napoli, then followed up that major move by poaching fellow countryman Fernando Bernardeschi from Juventus to form what was expected to be a dynamic pairing.

Instead, TFC has struggled mightily since their arrival, with Toronto currently sitting tied for second last in the entire MLS with a 3-10-12 record. To make matters worse, both Insigne and Bernardeschi have struggled at times, even butting heads with head coach Bob Bradley before his dismissal in late June.

In addition to Herdman, other names to reportedly make their way into the mix for Toronto's head coaching vacancy include Forge FC's Bobby Smyrniotis, D.C. United assistant Carl Robinson, and former Queen's Park Rangers manager Mark Warburton.

Smyrniotis' circumstances are particularly interesting, as Forge FC is in the midst of yet another successful Canadian Premier League season after winning the league title last year.

Also of note, Herdman’s contract as Canada’s men’s national team head coach reportedly runs through the 2026 World Cup, former Canada Soccer general secretary Earl Cochrane has said. It remains unclear as of now, however, whether or not that would be a hurdle to completing any potential deal with TFC.
