John Davidson Addresses Patrik Laine, Johnny Gaudreau, And More In Podcast Appearance
John Davidson appeared on a podcast on Wednesday and had some things to say about his team. He appeared on 100% Hockey with Millard and Shannon, which you can listen to here. As always, he's an excellent interviewee.
He was asked where he was when he heard the tragic news of Johnny Gaudreau's passing, and what it was like. Davidson says, "I was in St. Louis and the phone rang. It was Johnny's agent, and it was about 10 o'clock at night I think. I said to my wife, uh oh, you don't want calls from an agent at 10 o'clock at night. So I answered the phone and I got the news - It's just numbing. Flat-out numbing. Then at that time, I'm trying to phone and get ahold of the people that needed to know right away with the club. And then you just relive it, you go through it, you try to do the best you can and then you start thinking of all the ramifications, the family, the relatives, the funeral, the this and that. I give our room and our staff a lot of credit for how they've been able to get through it. For Meredith and the family, the parents, it's been a terrible ride."
He was also asked why Patrik Laine didn't work out in Columbus and how he felt about Laine taking shots at the team through the media. "That wasn't cool. Well, you could tell in the first period that it ticked the team off because he got put on his butt about three times. Somebody wrote something in Montreal that said we were "targeting his shoulder." He took a run at Voronkov. Voronkov threw his arm up a little bit and Patrik bounced back about 10 feet, his stick went flying another 10 feet, and it wasn't Voronkov running him, he ran Voronkov. And I don't know why he'd do that. Here's the best way of looking at it - Patrik's gone through a lot, he seems to be healed which is good, he's doing well in Montreal which is terrific. We, as a club, are much better off without Patrik Laine there. So it's a win-win. For Patrik, I wish him well. I've had a lot of talks with him, he's a nice man. But to go into Columbus and take shots at everybody before the game, I don't think I would've done that."
Below is a small clip of JD on the show.
He also says how excited he is to be back in the booth calling games with Steve Mears every now and then.
Davidson also goes on to talk about his life, tells old stories, and lightly touches on Mike Babcock and Pascal Vincent.
