A nightmare that was narrowly avoided for Toronto Maple Leafs fans is now a reality for Winnipeg Jets fans. Twenty-one-year-old RFA Patrik Laine is headed overseas to Switzerland to train with SC Bern of the top Swiss League while he awaits a new contract.

The translated article says Laine will join the team on Sunday as confirmed by head coach Kari Jalonen. He added that the forward will not play in the upcoming season, but train with the club in the meantime.

“Of course, as a Finnish coach I want to help Patrik in his situation,” Jalonen said. “We'll probably go forward one week at a time. He won't play for us next season.”

The star forward is one of many top RFAs still without a contract nearing the start of the NHL season. This news comes one day after Mitch Marner signed his whopping six-year, $65-million dollar contract, which might serve as a guide for the remaining RFAs.

Laine and Winnipeg’s contract talks are rumoured to be quite far apart, and adding the Atlantic Ocean between them isn’t going to help much.
