Jets' Mark Letestu sucks back packet of mustard during preseason game

PVRs throughout the hockey world were working overtime on Thursday night thanks to a peculiar moment during an NHL preseason clash between the Winnipeg Jets and Edmonton Oilers at Bell MTS Place.

In the third period of the contest, Jets forward Mark Letestu became the focus for a few moments while on the bench between shifts. And while his time on camera was short, it had many saying to themselves, “Did that just happen?”

Your eyes do not deceive you: That is Letestu tossing a packet of Heinz mustard into his yap. However, based on his reaction after swallowing, it may as well have been a shot of vodka.

Upon realizing what they just saw, much of social media was asking a similar question. “Why?”

So, in the end, this entire sequence of events became quite the educational experience for all those involved. Furthermore, this little condiment trick may now help beer league players save some cash the next time they’re on the ice.

Sure, electrolyte-infused beverages such as Gatorade and Powerade claim to assist with muscle cramps and ailments of that sort. However, do you really expect me to now shell out a few bucks per bottle when all I have to do is stuff my pockets full of mustard packets the next time I’m at a local diner?

Letestu likely hopes his (now-not-so) secret weapon will help him crack a tough Jets lineup. It was only a few seasons ago that the 34-year-old broke out with 16 goals and 35 points while a member of the Edmonton Oilers. Since then, his production has slowed a bit and he spent the majority of the 2018-19 campaign with the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters.

The veteran of 560 regular season games in the NHL signed a one-year, two-way contract with Winnipeg worth $700,000 in early July.
