Jets’ Haason Reddick could make team debut vs. Patriots: ‘It’s just about seeing where he’s at physically’

NEW YORK — Haason Reddick reported to the Jets facility on Monday after a lengthy holdout.

Less than a week after ending his holdout, Reddick appears on track to play in his first game of the season.

“It will be how quickly he can get up to speed with what we do,” Jets interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said. “Today will be a walkthrough, and tomorrow will be a full-speed practice, and we will get a way better feel with where he’s at. I would anticipate he plays.

“He’s an experienced player, he has played in a similar defense to ours as far as the schematic stuff he has to get caught up on. I don’t think that’s going to be a huge struggle for him. Now, it’s just about seeing where he’s at physically.”

On Sunday, hours before the Jets game against the Steelers on Sunday Night Football, Reddick agreed to an adjusted one-year contract of approximately $9 million in addition to new incentives that will allow him to potentially re-earn the $12 million he lost in fines for holding out. Reddick then reported to the Jets facility for the first time since his introductory press conference on April 1.

In March, the Jets acquired Reddick in a trade with the Eagles for a conditional third-round pick in 2026. Following his introductory press conference, Reddick didn’t attend any of the Jets’ spring offseason programs, including OTAs [organized team activities] and mandatory minicamp after a contract dispute with the team.

Before his contract was adjusted, Reddick was scheduled to make $14.25 million in the final year of a three-year, $45 million contract he signed with the Jets in 2022.

Reddick also didn’t report for Jets training camp on July 23 and was fined for every day he missed. On Aug. 12, he asked for a trade, but Jets general manager Joe Douglas declined his request.

After his former agency, Creative Artists Agency dropped him, Reddick then signed with Drew Rosenhaus, Ryan Matha and Rosenhaus Sports, who helped him negotiate his new adjusted contract.

The Jets certainly could use Reddick to inject a spark into the team. They have lost four consecutive games, and the Jets’ defense has not played well since Ulbrich became interim coach.

In his two games since replacing Robert Saleh, who was fired on Oct. 8, the Jets defense has allowed 384 yards and 30 points per game.

“We have to be diligent and we have to put him through the paces and get a really good feel for where he’s at, especially from a conditioning standpoint, to your point, so we’ll take these next two or three days to really put him through the paces,” Ulbrich said. “If he’s ready, we’re going to roll because obviously we need him.

“He’s a huge part of the success that we will have on defense and everything he said to me is he’s been conditioning, he’s been working and not just the condition, he’s been doing football stuff, so I’m excited to see where he’s at the next couple days.”

Adams postgame speech

Davante Adams has only been with the Jets for eight days, but he’s already become a vocal leader within the locker room.

Following the Jets’ 37-15 loss to the Steelers on Sunday, Adams spoke up after he believed the team lacked energy before and during the game.

Aaron Rodgers called Adams’ speech “the realest” he had heard in a locker room in 20 years.

“It’s not really my personality to see something that’s not right and to just let it go on, regardless of whether it’s from the coaches, players, you know, management, support staff, whoever,” Adams said. “Obviously it was a lack of energy and urgency out there.

“It was apparent, especially coming from, you know, I’ve played on teams that have that winning culture. I had reservations about speaking up too early and, and being too vocal too, too early. But I felt like, you know, in my mind, I said, F that because I need to, you know, we don’t have time, and I got to do whatever I got to do to help this team move forward and lacking energy.

“That’s a prerequisite to be able to go out there and have a good year or have a good play or, you know, whatever it is. So in my mind, it was, it was something that I wouldn’t have been able to sleep if I didn’t speak up on it.”

Following Sunday’s game. Rodgers also spoke about the lack of energy, citing that he felt like the Jets were “flat” during pregame warmups, which translated to the game.

Gang Green was up 15-6 before Rodgers’ second-quarter interception changed the game’s trajectory. Following Rodgers’ first interception, the Steelers scored 31 unanswered points to win by 22 points.

The Jets are 2-5 and on a four-game losing streak entering this weekend’s game against the Patriots.

“They’re just real guys and when they speak up, you feel it and I was kind of looking at him when Brick [Ulbrich] was talking, and Brick was saying some great stuff too and he’s been fantastic, but I just could feel like Tae [Adams] about to say something and then he started talking and everybody that was in that locker room felt it, so I drove home with him after the game and just told him how I proud of him of what he said in that moment.”

Rodgers new injury

The Jets have a laundry list of injuries, including Rodgers, who is currently dealing with three at the moment.

In addition to his sore knee and low ankle sprain, Rodgers now has a hamstring injury he suffered in the loss to the Steelers.

Against Pittsburgh, Rodgers appeared to have compromised mobility, which would explain the hamstring injury. The Jets held a walkthrough practice on Wednesday, and Ulbrich said that Rodgers would be limited.

However, Rodgers said the injury shouldn’t affect his throwing ability.

“I mean, I feel good on gameday,” Rodgers said. “The ankle responded really well. I just have some swelling in my knee from time to time, but I don’t think it’s going to be an issue.”

In addition to Rodgers, right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker [ankle], safeties Tony Adams, [hamstring], Ashtyn Davis [concussion], wide receiver Allen Lazard [chest], and defensive tackle Leki Fotu [knee] did not practice on Wednesday. Right tackle Morgan Moses [knee], linebacker Quincy Williams [neck], defensive end Will McDonald [shoulder], and cornerback Michael Carter II [back] were all limited.

Cornerback D.J. Reed [groin], who missed the game against the Steelers, participated fully. The Jets also opened tight end Kenny Yeboah‘s 21-day practice window after he has been on injured reserve the entire season due to a groin injury he suffered in the preseason finale against the Giants. Yeboah was a full participant on Wednesday.
