Jets Defender Participating In Practice In A Non-Contact Jersey

Winnipeg Jets defenseman Colin Miller is participating in practice today in a non-contact jersey.

Today's practice marks the first time Miller has skated with the team since he suffered a fractured larynx on Jan. 4 against the Detroit Red Wings when the puck hit him. The 32-year-old had played in 34 games before sustaining the injury, scoring two goals and eight points.

The Jets' HC Scott Arniel and the training staff were quick to acknowledge the severity of the injury.

"Dangerous situation, but he’s doing a lot better," said Arniel. "He can’t get hit again, obviously. He’s actually on a bike. He’s around the guys. Talks a little quieter. But he’s upbeat. It’s a precaution now. He can’t go out and something happens, somebody runs into him… so, it has to heal."

The initial report was that Miller would be out for two weeks. It's been 10 days since the injury so returning to practice without contact is about where Miller should be in terms of the process for returning. The next step for Miller will be to participate in at least one practice with contact before he can return to game action.

The Jets are back in action tonight against the Vancouver Canucks but will do so without Miller once again.
