Jeremy Roenick slams Marshawn Lynch for anthem protest

It was an ill-considered morning on Twitter for NHL on NBC analyst Jeremy Roenick.

Evidently aggravated by news that another NFL player exercised his right to protest on the same weekend white supremacists and similarly vile human beings marched in Charlottesville, Va., Roenick took to social media to share just what values he prefers in a teammate:

Roenick’s comments were immediately met with sharp recoil, but he doubled down on his criticism of Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch just minutes later:

Now, there’s a little to unpack here.

First, for all we know, James Harrison is a proud patriot and an exemplary teammate. But what he isn’t, however, is an example of what to aspire to. Harrison’s admission to assaulting his girlfriend in 2008 is enough proof of that.

Twitter users were naturally quick to point out his previous, and frankly disgraceful, indiscretions to Roenick.

Further, and in a twist dripping with irony, Roenick’s personal online firestorm was sparked by an episode of fake news. Harrison’s insistence that a teammate “better be in a wheelchair” if they sat for the national anthem is a bogus statement, as confirmed by Steelers PR.

Harrison pointed that out himself on Instagram.

You can be assured that Roenick does not condone the revolting events that transpired in Charlottesville. Before signing off (but not before Twitter users noted that Roenick chose to slam Lynch before condemning the violence and hate in Virginia), he came up with this solution:

Wisely, Roenick has, for the time being, chosen to log off.
