Both last season with Crystal Palace and over the summer with the France team at the Olympic Games in Paris, Jean-Philippe Mateta (27) has considerably enhanced his reputation.

His last campaign with Crystal Palace was comfortably his most prolific. The Frenchman netted an impressive 16 goals in 35 games, earning him a place in Thierry Henry’s France side at the Olympics. He then went on to net five goals in six games for Les Bleus as they earned the silver medal in Paris.

Despite his rise to prominence, Mateta remained at Crystal Palace. That came despite interest from Premier League rivals Aston Villa, as well as Serie A sides AS Roma and Napoli, L’Équipe understands. In an interview with the publication, he has reflected on remaining at Selhurst Park.

Mateta disappointed at staying at Crystal Palace?

“I am someone who is realistic,” began Mateta. â€śThe club didn’t want to sell me, so I move on and I give everything to the team to help us get better results than those we achieved last year. And when it is the right time to ask those questions, we’ll ask them.”

The Frenchman added that it was important to â€śnot get hung up on the past” and look forward. Another prolific campaign with Crystal Palace could certainly open up the possibility of a move away, either in January or next summer.
