Jaylon Jones labels Kyler Murray greatest HS football player from Texas

Moving forward and looking ahead to the Chicago Bears' Week 9 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals on the road, one player has plenty of familiarity with their quarterback. Cornerback Jaylon Jones, who played High School football with Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray had quite the praise for him this week ahead of their visit to Arizona.

Appearing as a guest on "Intercepted with Kevin Byard," Jones was asked about his time with Murray as high school teammates, and the Bears cornerback had a glorious compliment for the Cardinals quarterback. Coming out of the state of Texas, widely regarded as the best high school football state in the United States, and Jones believes Murray is the greatest high school football player to ever come out of Texas.

"No question [he's the greatest ever out of high school in Texas] you knew he was legendary, he was great," Jones said. "He just had that IT factor. Being somebody who was also a competitor, I was like he's holding down the offense, let me hold down the defense. He was doing things I've never seen before but he also had this aura about him that he was not going to lose. Nobody from where we're from is shocked what all he's done. Him winning the Heisman, going No. 1 [NFL Draft] he's always been a hard worker, always had the IT factor, gifted."

Since being selected with the first overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft, Murray has thrown for 17,285 yards in his career with 105 touchdown passes and 49 interceptions. He's also added 2,792 yards rushing and 28 touchdowns on the ground. But despite his overall career stats as a dual-threat quarterback, Murray is 32-40-1 in his career and has one lone playoff game on his resume, a loss to the Los Angeles Rams in 2021.

The Bears are coming off a game in which they were allowed Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, a dual-threat just as Murray is, to pick apart their defense with plenty of yardage. They were able to withstand his ability to move the ball down the field and hold them to four field goals until the eventual game-winning Hail Mary touchdown pass. The defense will now hope to use lessons learned against Daniels as a way to further prevent Murray from putting up any points against their defense which has now held opponents to 21 points or less in the past 13 games which is the current longest streak in the NFL.

It may have not all fully translated yet over to the NFL, but Jones made it known that he's always believed that Murray was a very special talent dating back to their high school days.
