What Jaylon Johnson wants in Bears' next head coach
All the talk around the Chicago Bears offseason has centered around the search for the team's next head coach, but one of the core players doesn't care as much about the name.
Cornerback Jaylon Johnson, who was named to the second straight Pro Bowl, was also very vocal during the firing of former head coach Matt Eberflus, stated this week that he's most concerned about the results of the next coach, and not the name of who they are.
Making his weekly appearance on 670 The Score after the season concluded, Johnson was asked about the ongoing coaching search and the several names attached to it. Looking back at Eberflus' tenure in Chicago, Johnson said he's not sure what the strong leader would look like, but said they need a "man of the house" to come in and change things within the locker room and organization.
“Strong leaders look different in different environments," Johnson said. "With a situation like this, things are changing, things are evolving, I don't know what the right combination is. But we definitely need that leadership for guys to fall under. I think for me, it always starts with the man at the top. I look at our team as a house – we need a man of the house to step up, to guide us, to lead us. Of course, everybody is responsible for their own roles they play in the house."
Johnson would reflect back on Eberflus' time with Chicago, saying that he may have been the right fit when he was introduced as head coach in 2021, but only time tells the full picture. Much of the conversation around the Bears' vacancy has been with a target on either Mike Vrabel or Ben Johnson to be the team's next head coach, but Johnson only cares about positive results coming in.
“I’ve been through it, seen it," Johnson said. "At the end of the day, I don't really care who gets brought in. I’ll wait to see the results. That’s what I care about, is the results. I mean, whoever it may be. Some people want it to be Mike (Vrabel), some people want it to be Ben (Johnson). I mean, everybody has their opinions on who it should be. At the end of the day, I care about results.”
It's hard to disagree with Johnson, who has yet to play in a season where the team was above. 500, and only has one playoff appearance in his rookie season in 2020. Johnson is an unquestioned leader of this franchise, making it all that more important for upper management to find the right coach that will produce the results that Johnson has been waiting for since his arrival.
