Javier Fernandez, the 2018 Olympic bronze medalist, is the greatest Spanish figure skater of all time. He’s also been nipping at training partner Yuzuru Hanyu’s heels for years, challenging him for his spot atop the rankings as the two have traded record-breaking performances at one international competition after another.

While it’s largely Fernandez’s technical brilliance that has made him a two-time World Champion, five-time European champion and eight-time Spanish national champion, it was his artistry that made him the star of the figure skating exhibition gala at the Gangneung Ice Arena on Sunday in PyeongChang.

In fact, artistry might not be a strong enough word for his glorious four-minute “Aerobics Class” spectacle that included acting, costume changes and a super-medley of iconic 1980’s workout jams.

HE TURNED HIS SKATES INTO CONVERSE SNEAKERS. What a legend.

Fernandez debuted the delightful “Super Javi” exhibition program back in 2013. According to an interview he gave to Absolute Skating a few years ago, he actually collaborated with legendary Canadian skater, Kurt Browning, to choreograph the piece – and the aerobics instructor’s voice over the music is actually his own.

He also doesn’t really mind taking that bucket of water to face. “It’s kind of refreshing!” he said. “You are tired and you get a little bit of water on you…It’s nice – I don’t mind it at all.”

It’s mathematically impossible for a skater to finish their Olympic career on a higher note than Javier Fernandez did in 2018. Long live Super Javi.
