Jaromir Jagr gets 1,900th NHL point on 45th birthday (Video)

On his 45th birthday, Florida Panthers forward Jaromir Jagr notched the 1,900th point of his NHL career.

The play where Jagr hit this total came at the 12:41 mark of the third period in Florida’s 6-5 overtime win over the San Jose Sharks. Jagr received a pass from Florida defenseman Alex Petrovic in front of the Sharks net and then fed the puck to Aleksander Barkov for a shot past San Jose goaltender Martin Jones. Jagr’s total points ranks second in NHL history behind Wayne Gretzky’s 2,857. He moved into second place, ahead of Mark Messier and by himself, on Dec. 23, 2016.

The assist was Jagr’s 32nd point of the season in his 54th game and third in his last three games.

Jagr was asked about getting the assist on his birthday, but he didn’t want to talk about the personal achievement. Instead, he noted the importance of the Panthers’ improving health with the returns of Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau. Barkov scored two goals and added an assist in the game and Huberdeau scored the overtime winner. Both players returned to the lineup after long injured stretches (Barkov since Dec. 28 and Huberdeau for the whole season) on Feb. 3 and the Panthers have gone 3-1-0 in that stretch.

“I don’t really worry about it. I’m glad (Jonathan Huberdeau) and (Alexsander Barkov) are back so we know we can play together again,” Jagr said. “It’s a lot of fun. They’re both great players and make my life on the ice a lot easier.”

Panthers coach Tom Rowe praised Jagr for how he has helped teach the team’s younger core.

“He’s great. He’s’ really good. He’s a great player, obviously. He’s going to be in the Hall of Fame some day when his career’s over, whenever that it,” Rowe said. “He’s just a great guy. I’ve said it all year, his preparation is unbelievable, and our young guys have benefitted from it, watching on he prepares. It’s rubbed off on a lot of those guys too.”
