Jahmyr Gibbs 40 time: How fast is the Lions running back?

They don't call him "Sonic" for nothing.

Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs is fast. Very fast. Maybe not as fast as SpongeBob running to the mountain and back, but he's certainly quick enough to avoid defenders and any other oncoming traffic on the football field.

One half of the dominant backfield duo with David Montgomery, Gibbs brings the speed while his partner brings the punch, making for a nearly unstoppable running game.

The Lions spent a first-round pick on Gibbs in the 2023 NFL draft. In a world where the debate surrounding the value of running backs rages on, the former Alabama star is making the argument for his position.

Of course, Detroit's dominant offensive line also helps, but Gibbs' 0-to-60 ability certainly makes life easy for the big guys up front.

Here's more on Gibbs' speed and where that puts him amongst NFL players this season.

Gibbs ran a 4.36 40-yard dash at the NFL combine in 2023.

That put him in a tie for seventh-best at the event, but ranked second amongst running backs, sliding in behind De'Von Achane, who ran a 4.32.

Former Titans' running back Chris Johnson still holds the best 40-yard time for a running back, turning in a lightning quick 4.24 in 2008.

How fast is Jahmyr Gibbs?

Gibbs registered with a 22.03 mph on the radar gun during his 70-yard touchdown run in Week 8 against the Tennessee Titans.

While that's not fast enough for a speeding ticket, he is right around the common speed limit of 25 mph for a residential area. Bottom line, he is motoring when he gets in top gear, making him a nearly impossible player to catch in the open field.

The NFL's top-10 fastest ball carriers all registered at least 21.8 mph on the radar in the regular season. Gibbs, KaVontae Turpin and Saquon Barkley all managed to crack the list twice over the 18 weeks.
