J.P. Arencibia: Time for Blue Jays youngsters to 'get their feet wet'

A pair of highly-touted youngsters were called up to the Blue Jays this week and each made fairly successful Major League debuts in Monday’s 3-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals.

Former Blue Jays catcher J.P. Arencibia touched on pitcher Sean Reid-Foley and catcher Danny Jansen in the latest Digging In podcast, saying the next month and a half won’t make or break their fledgling MLB careers. Arencibia adds that Reid-Foley and Jansen should realize that patience and a level head at this time is key to long-term success.

“I think as young players we come up there and you want to put so much pressure on yourself to succeed and do all these great things, but at the end of the day his rope is really long.”

Arencibia notes that next to no one will remember the successes or failures of a player during his first 35-40 games in the big leagues. Aaron Judge and Mike Trout, among others, are prime examples of this.

“That first month and a half, man, you just have to go out there and really soak it all in.”

It’s also about taking advantage of an extended opportunity to showcase yourself, one considerably longer than one you might receive as a veteran coming out of the minors.

“If you’re a Triple-A guy later in your career, and you come up, you might have one week to show what you can do, right? You know how it works in the big leagues. There’s a lot of guys that with a different organization get their chance later in their career and they know ‘hey, dude, I have to get going right out of the gate in this organization or I might be designated here in the next week.”
