Speculation abound when Deshaun Watson tweeted “some things never change....” Tuesday night.
The Houston Texans quarterback didn’t shed any more light on the tweet that was published shortly after the Texans hired New England Patriots executive Nick Caserio as their new general manager.
The tweet also arrived after a decision by prosecutors in Kenosha, Wisconsin to not press charges against Rusten Sheskey, the white police officer who shot Jacob Blake several times in the back this summer.
Watson’s tweet could have certainly been addressing either piece of news.
It turns out he’s unhappy with Texans management, according to Thursday reports from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Report: Watson ‘extremely unhappy’ with Texans
Rapoport reported that Watson is “extremely unhappy” with the Texans and has been ignoring calls from management after team owner Cal McNair told the QB he would consult him in the hiring process for a new coach and general manager. According to Rapoport, McNair did not follow through with that promise in hiring Caserio. The Texans are still conducting their head coach search.
According to Schefter, the “Texans neither considered nor consulted with those endorsed by their franchise quarterback” after Watson provided suggestions to McNair. Watson’s ire is directed at McNair and established Texans management, according to the report — not Caserio.
Report: McNair ignored Watson’s Eric Bieniemy suggestion
According to NFL Network’s Albert Breer, Watson suggested that McNair consider Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy for the head coaching opening. Bieniemy is arguably the hottest candidate for coaching vacancies this offseason and came with a recommendation from Patrick Mahomes to Watson.
According to Breer, McNair didn’t bother to put in a request to interview Bieniemy.
Watson is also irked because he found out about the Caserio hire via social media and has lingering resentment over not being informed ahead of time about last offseason’s decision to trade away wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, according to Schefter.
On Monday, Watson called for a “culture shift” in Houston on the heels of a 4-12 season.
Watson signed a four-year, $156 million extension in September. If he wants out, he’s going to have to compel the Texans to trade him, an unlikely ask of a general manager joining a team with few assets other than Watson to build around.
